Happy Juneteenth! Today we commemorate June 19th, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger of the Union came to Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, which brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to the enslaved peoples in Texas. We celebrate Juneteenth but also are mindful of the sacrifices made and the work that continues to have to be done to ensure that the next generation of Americans continue to enjoy the rights engendered by the U.S. Constitution.
